Grand Battery Technologies SA (Pty) Ltd trading as GBT Energy Solutions was established in 1999 to bring the benefits of portable and renewable energy solutions to South Africa and indeed the entire continent.

GBT Energy Solutions was established in 1999 as a joint venture between Grand Battery Technologies Bhd of Malaysia and South African businessmen understanding the infrastructure realities of the African continent and hence the opportunities presented for portable and renewable energy products in this enviornment.

Initially the focus was on rechargeable battery systems for the retail market and for projects. However with the new environmental laws and problems that we face in the modern age, it was clear that renewable energy was the next step as most of the renewable products require batteries to run.

In 2010 BTN Holdings (Pty) Ltd, a company founded by two well established businessmen, namely Bongani Biyela and, Glenn Twala identified the requirement of renewable energy solutions for the development of urban and rural communities and invested into GBT Energy Solutions.
